Container

Upon completion of the Norfolk International Gateway (NIT) and the Virginia International Gateway (VIG) in 2020, The Port of Virginia increased capacity by 40% with 1 million additional containers annually, handling over 2 million TEUs during Fiscal Year 2019. Our best is yet to come.

Along with more capacity, The Port of Virginia offers more ways to efficiently move cargo. We are the largest intermodal rail port on the United States East Coast, with Smart Stack® service providing fast and reliable rail product to the Midwest markets and centrally-located on the Mid-Atlantic coast, just 2.5 hours to open sea with direct service to 45+ countries worldwide with 30 global port calls.

The Port of Virginia is the only U.S. East Coast port with Congressional authorization for 55-foot depth channels, with expansion currently underway and the largest ship-to-shore cranes in the Western Hemisphere doing the heavy lifting. To put it simply, we’re ready to put our premier location, best-in-class dwell and gate times, expanded cargo capacity, and 24/7 customer service to work.
