Success Stories

As a leading multi-modal transportation provider, with experience serving ports from Maine to Texas, Columbia Coastal Transport understands the critical nature of marine terminal operations. Ports act as gateways for commerce, and Columbia Coastal Transport’s barge service supplements the services provided by The Port of Virginia by offering an efficient method to move large volumes of cargo, minimizing chokepoints. The Port of Virginia is a true hub port, capable of serving the largest container vessels deployed on the U.S. East Coast today, and those projected to be in service in the next 5-10 years. The arrival of these larger ships, calling on fewer ports with more cargo, will only increase the demand for all-water barge solutions. Based on 25 years of experience, serving our mutual customers, we are confident in The Port of Virginia’s expertise as terminal operators and we value the Port as a strategic partner.

Having been a customer and partner of The Port of Virginia for over 25 years is a statement in and of itself. Today, we continue to look to expand our facilities in Virginia. With the Port’s Mid-Atlantic export location, we have access to many products and with two Class I railroads delivering into our facilities, we remain competitive.  Looking towards a future of ever-changing container flows, we feel The Port of Virginia will remain a vital export gateway for our cargo.

Adding new locations is another way we can better serve our customers. Portsmouth Marine Terminal offers an expansive and extremely competitive North Atlantic distribution gateway for local markets as well as unit-train capacity for land-bridge destinations. With the support of the port management team, we’ve already proven we can have operations up and running in as little as 48 hours!”

When APG began researching a location for a new manufacturing facility, the access to and the assistance provided by The Port of Virginia made the decision to build in Hampton Roads an easy one. Obviously this relationship will allow us to offer logistical cost savings to our customers overseas. But the personal interactions with Port employees during our tour of the Port facilities was a very unexpected and very welcome surprise.”

We are a multi-modal transportation customer, utilizing barge, rail and truck to move our agricultural products through a network of U.S. ports. The Port of Virginia has excellent rail connections which provide us efficiencies as we move large volumes of export product from the Midwest to the East Coast. With close to 30 international shipping lines calling on the port, Virginia also offers direct connections to every major world market. In addition, Virginia’s port management team understands our business and the value it brings to the port. Katoen Natie chose to expand its footprint in Norfolk because of proximity to the natural deep-water Port of Virginia, the dual rail connection with both Norfolk Southern and CSX, and a great local workforce. The CMA CGM Group is pleased to choose the Commonwealth of Virginia to expand our operations and create 400 jobs. Committed to the U.S. economy, we have a long history in Virginia that began in 2002 when we opened our first office in Virginia Beach. We later increased our presence and moved into our Norfolk headquarters in 2005. We are very pleased to expand our roots again and continue working with the Port of Virginia. Together we provide great maritime services to customers both in Virginia and around the world in addition to offering reliable inland transport to America’s heartland utilizing the port’s excellent rail network.”

The close proximity of this property to the Port of Virginia and the flexibility to expand and allow for Navien’s continued investment over time helped us make this decision. Establishing an East Coast facility will support Navien’s growth and allow for faster delivery to primary eastern markets while balancing current shipments coming into California. We look forward to working with the Virginia Talent Accelerator Program as we grow this facility and its importance to Navien’s overall leadership position in North America.”

As a freight forwarder specialized in the reefer market, we have been looking for a US port that would be operated efficiently and having enough plugs. The Port of Virginia has 1200+ plugs, an efficient customs processes and fast gate in/out for truckers. Virginia International Gateway (VIG) and Norfolk International Terminals (NIT) are well connected with rail and have a good barge to Richmond Marine Terminals (RMT). The Port of Virginia is also rail connected with NS and CSX making them an ideal gateway into Midwest US. On a side note, the people at The Port of Virginia are knowledgeable and service minded.”
