Steps required to have container contents fumigated:

  • Customer or freight forwarder notifies fumigation location of fumigation requirements.
  • Containers arriving via truck to be fumigated:  If the containers are going to be trucked directly to the fumigation location, VIT is not involved until fumigated containers arrive on the terminal for export.
  • Containers arriving via RAIL to be fumigated:  The customer, NVOCC or freight forwarder will notify Customer Service that subject container is scheduled for fumigation via email at povcustomerservice@vit.org or for urgent request at 757-440-7160.  Subject line of email should read:

Fumigation Required – 038XXXXXXX (Booking Number). One email per booking number will be required.  Containers arriving at the CSX rail ramp will be required to be drayed to fumigation location from that facility and delivered to appropriate terminal to meet vessel.

Other additional information that would be useful in body of email:  arrival terminal, arrival date, and motor carrier handling dray to facility.  This information should be sent as soon as rail billing entered.

The RAIL export containers are still to be rail billed to the appropriate VIT pier.  Customer, NVOCC, or freight forwarder will arrange drayage off of the terminal.  Upon completion of fumigation, fumigation location will return container to the respective VIT terminal to meet vessel.

Containers arriving via BARGE to be fumigated:  The customer or freight forwarder will notify Customer Service that subject container is scheduled for fumigation via email at povcustomerservice@vit.org or for urgent request at 757-440-7160.  Subject line of email should read: Fumigation Required – 038XXXXXXX (Booking Number). One email per booking number will be required.

Other additional information that would be useful in body of email:  arrival terminal, arrival date, and motor carrier handling dray to facility.  This information should be sent as soon as known and/ or D/O is cut.

Customer or freight forwarder will arrange drayage off of the terminal.  Upon completion of fumigation, fumigation location will arrange for the return to the respective VIT terminal to meet vessel.

*Fumigation location is defined as Caruso, Inc., Royal Fumigation, or Western Fumigation
